WHAT KIND OF BIKE DO I NEED?

Road
Mountain
Racing

The USA Triathlon Federation prohibits the use of tandem and recumbent bikes. The safety guidelines of USA Triathlon, the governing body of the sport of triathlon in the United States, direct that recumbents are too low to the ground for competitive environments. As a result, the USAT rules prohibit their use in sanctioned events. Any violation of this rule would void the race sanction which provides the insurance required by public entities to stage a triathlon.

Helmets are required for all cyclists and chinstraps must be snapped before the participant mounts the bike.

Handlebars and stem must be fashioned to prevent any danger. All handlebar ends must be solidly plugged to lessen the possibility of injury.

HOW CAN I RENT A BIKE?

Though there are a few Race cities where DWTS supplies bike rental contacts as a courtesy, we do not have information for bike rentals in all Race cities. We suggest you do a "Google" search for area bike rental shops.

We recommend that you rent equipment from a reputable dealer and that you are properly fitted for the equipment you have rented. It is also in your best interest that you train with a piece of equipment before you use it in a Race.

CAN I USE AN IPOD/WALKMAN DURING THE RACE?

No. USA Triathlon rules 3.4(i), 5.8 and 6.3 prohibit unauthorized accessories or illegal equipment (headset, radio, headphones, personal audio device, etc.) for safety reasons. Athletes-in-progress must be aware of their environment and be able to hear instructions from Race personnel at all times.
