An open water swim in Lake Washington, participants can expect cold temperatures (approximately 65 to 70 degrees) and limited visibility. As this is a long distance Swim in open water, it is advised that participants have the skill sets to swim one-half mile without stopping. One-half mile is equal to 36 lengths of a 25 yard pool, which participants should be able to complete without stopping. Plus, in cold water the body will use more energy in order to maintain body temperature, so be fully prepared for these elements.
Can I wear a wetsuit?
The course is triangularly shaped and uses two large turn buoys. Swimmers enter the water down a boat ramp and swim east to the first turn buoy. Turning right (south) around the first buoy, participants swim the second leg, angling toward shore to the second turn buoy. At the second buoy, swimmers then turn 180 degrees and swim toward the swim exit boat ramp. Lifeguards will be situated both within and outside the course.

approx. 20K or 12.4 miles

A technical course using Lake Washington Boulevard and Interstate 90, participants can expect a short, difficult S-curved assent midway on the course requiring good bike handling skills. Participants must know and use proper passing techniques as riders are traveling at varying rates of speed.
The out and back bike course begins as participants exit the transition through the start scaffolding on Lake Washington Blvd. Outbound cyclists head north on Lake Washington Blvd and proceed to Day Street, making a 90 degree left turn onto Day Street and an immediate 90 degree right turn onto the I-90 access road. This is a particularly narrow and technical part of the course. All cyclists, in both directions, must ride single file on the I-90 access road. Outbound cyclists will benefit by downshifting prior to the turn at Day Street. Once onto I90, Outbound cyclists ride east at a gradual incline to a turn around point. Cyclists then return to the finish on the same course and enter the transition area through the finish scaffolding on 43rd Avenue. The course is closed to vehicle traffic with the exception of official motorbikes and vehicles.

approx. .5K or 3.1 miles

Runners exit the north field of Genesee Park on the east side of the transition area and run southbound on Lake Washington Blvd toward Seward Park. Runners turn around at approximately Orcas Street and run northbound on Lake Washington Boulevard, turning onto Genesee Way and running up a short hill to Genesee Street. Running west on the westbound side of Genesee Street, runners enter the fenced vehicle storage lot of the Seattle Parks facility before finishing at the south end of Genesee Park. |
